| What happens when Mughlai meets Telangana? |
[Aug. 6th, 2008|10:27 pm] |
Mma Potokwani and Mma Ramotswe found a small section of wall, shaded by a tree, and sat down on that. Mma Potokwani drew a deep breath. 'I am always happy when I am in the bush,' she said. 'I think everybody is.' 'I certainly am,' said Mma Ramotswe. 'I live in a town, but I do not think my heart lives there.'
'Our stomachs live in towns,' said Mma Potokwani, patting the front of her dress. 'That is where the work is. Our stomachs know that. But our hearts are usually somewhere else.'
The only time that I ever found my head shaking itself in disagreement while reading a story from this adorable novel series. Why else, Mma, would I want to spend a Nizam's half a fortune and travel some seven and a half thousand miles to eat a single plate of biryani? Well, maybe two. But surely, such a rash decision cannot be taken by the heart alone. I hold the stomach (and all other parts of me) equally responsible!
If there are any others who share my eccentricity and wish to join forces this month, leave a suitable message. The smoke city, the anti-gardens city and the city of four minarets will be descended upon. Reveal the secret places where you go to tease those taste buds nowadays.

| Reserve, reserve and reserve some more until we forget what the reservations were meant for! |
[Apr. 15th, 2008|12:25 pm] |
India's political and administrative scenario often reminds me of a headless chicken trying to cross the road through peak-hour traffic. Now that the reservations are announced, it seems they have managed to leg cuff the bird as well.
Have you ever heard the story of a man who experimented on a household cockroach? He cut off a wing and commanded the roach to move. The insect lifted itself in the air and promptly fell. The man snipped off the other wing and asked the roach to move. The cockroach tried to run away. He, then, cut off the front leg and told the roach to move. The poor insect crawled a few centimeters. Gradually, the other front leg, the two middle legs and one of the back legs were separated and the roach was told to move. It still wriggled to the center of the dish. Finally, the last limb was severed and the cockroach was told to move again. This time it did not.
The clever man wrote the conclusion in his journal: When all the appendages of a cockroach are severed off, the insect turns deaf.
This was narrated as a "joke" many years ago. Somehow, it came to mind today. |

| Christmas memories |
[Dec. 28th, 2007|12:49 pm] |
One of the most fascinating things about growing up in a multicultural housing society like ours was the enhanced festival fun which lasted all year round. Not only did we celebrate all the hindu festivals starting from Sankrant and Gudi Padwa all the way down to the big D, but we also partook in the many Punjabi/Sindhis, Parsi, Muslim and Christian festivals all round the year.
Christmas was a particular favourite because there were not one or two, but five Christian families in the building. That meant more homes to visit and more sweets to devour. ( Very long read )
So this year, as Christmas came nearer, I decided to incorporate some of that fun into our quiet holiday so far from home. We started the day with making dosas for brunch, watched lots of movies and wrapped the day with a sumptuous Chicken biryani. There were cakes and cookies too, just that they didn't last until Christmas. :)
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and wish you a terrific 2008 ahead! |

Yay! new game!!! yeah, right, if it lasts!
Alright folks, starting today, here's a new game for anyone who wishes to play along.
Rules (just the initial ones, will refine as we play on):
1. Sew together my random clues and guess the right answer. 2. Pick the last letter of the answer, think of a word beginning from this last letter, spin 3 random clues (min. 3, even if you use picture clues) and post them here for me or someone else to guess and post more clues following the same rules. You don't have to make the clues rhyme, great if they do! ;)
Your word could be just about anything, a thing, place, person/group, event, movie, idea, anything, nothing. But remember, something that makes people go, "I so knew that!!" is more fun than "Is that even a word!?!" So choose intelligently.
I prefer you don't google answers, or at least mention in your comment if you do. As usual, no prizes. The right answers will be confirmed by the quizzer either by replying to your comment, or if no right answer comes forth, you can carry forward the question to another week (whenever the same letter chain evolves) or by revealing it the next day. Those of you who had joined the Antakshiri game will know how it works.
( Ok enough talking, click here for your question ) |

However lame, social networking looks like it is here to stay!
So if you're out there too, look me up as 'Mona SixteenTen' or by my gmail id if you know it. Let's have a go at each other's vocab while we're out there. |

| Full fun |
[Nov. 14th, 2007|11:48 am] |
As a kid, my favouritest hindi hero was Amitabh Bachchan. I could watch any of his songs, any number of times and never get bored. But one of his songs "John Johnny Janardhan" from the movie Naseeb was very special. Everytime the song played on TV, all the grown-ups in the house would gather around the TV set to catch glimpses of the many star personalities who made cameo appearances during the song. While I found all the background commentary rather amusing, about who spotted whom first, and which star looked better, I was mostly content at fixing my saucer-eyes on the tall man and his tray full of glasses which he juggled with great agility. That song was a musical kaleidoscope and circus rolled into one.
Om Shanti Om is something like that. A madcap comedy (most of which is tastefully done) with a looking glass pointing to the past. I don't even remember the last time I enjoyed a Bollywood spoof as much as this (were there others?). Apart from the obvious scenes, there are several retro influences snuck cleverly into the corners that catch your eye and keep the mind guessing. You can only marvel at the people who put this roller coaster of a movie together and envy them for all the fun they must've had making it! :-)
But if your childhood history was basically deprived of Bollywood chapters, it makes sense to skip the movie. To me, after the bitter experience of Saawariya, OSO was definitely worth every cent I put into it! It was good masaledar manna! :) |
